Bright orange, blue and yellow bicycles are parked on almost every sidewalk, and you can unlock one with your phone in seconds. For trips of one or two kilometers, say from a metro exit to a restaurant, a teahouse or an alley entrance, a shared bike beats walking and avoids the cost and hassle of a taxi. The flat, tree-lined city center, the riverside paths and the broad avenues are ideal cycling territory, and on a mild day a bike is the most pleasant way to move between sights.
How They Work
You need one of the shared-bike apps, usually Meituan or HelloBike, or you can start from the mini program inside WeChat without installing anything. Open the app, scan the QR code on the bike handlebar, and the lock pops open with a click. Ride where you like, then park within the marked service area and end the ride in the app. The lock clicks shut and you are charged automatically. A typical ride costs about 1.5 yuan per 30 minutes, and small monthly or weekly passes are available if you ride every day.
The Rules to Know
- Ride on bike lanes and roads, not on busy pedestrian-only streets such as the middle of Chunxi Road.
- Park only in designated zones; if you leave a bike in a forbidden spot the app charges a management fee.
- Wear comfortable shoes and watch out for e-scooters weaving past on narrow lanes.
- Do not ride after drinking, and do not let another person ride on the bike with you.
- Check the tires and brakes before you start, and wear no loose hems that could catch in the wheel.
When a Bike Wins
A shared bike is unbeatable for the final leg between metro and destination, for cruising a riverside path, or for linking several sights in a compact old-town area. It is not a substitute for the metro across town, and in heavy summer rain or winter cold it loses its charm. Always lock the bike properly when you finish, or the app keeps charging you even after you walk away. Avoid riding on busy main roads where cars move fast; stick to the quieter streets and marked bike lanes.
Best Rides in Town
The riverside paths along the Funan River are the most pleasant cycling routes, linking parks and tea houses without heavy traffic. The area around People's Park and Kuanzhai Alleys is flat and quiet. Avoid rush-hour main roads, when cars and e-bikes pack the lanes. Check the weather, because rain makes the tree-lined paths slippery. Return the bike before the app's service area limit, or you pay a fee.
Costs and Safety
Rides are cheap, but leaving a bike outside the service area triggers a fee, so check the app map before you park. Helmets are rarely worn by locals, but it is safer to wear one on a longer ride. Watch wet leaves after rain, which make brakes weak. Never ride three abreast. At night, use a bike only on well-lit roads, since many side streets are dark. Return the bike with an audible click, or the app keeps charging you. Keep one hand free for your phone but watch the road.
