Chengdu's city buses (公交车) are the budget-friendly backbone of the transport system. They go almost everywhere the metro does not, and a single ride costs just 2 yuan. They are slower and can be crowded in traffic, but they are also a cheap way to see the city from street level and reach sights that sit a little away from a metro exit. Combined with the metro, buses let you cover the whole city for almost nothing, and they are especially useful for reaching residential neighborhoods, night markets and restaurants tucked into side streets.
The BRT Elevated Loop
The most useful bus service for a visitor is the BRT, a bus rapid transit system that runs on an elevated road around the Second Ring Road. The main loop lines K1 and K2 circle the ring on dedicated bus-only lanes, so they avoid street traffic entirely. Stations are elevated and enclosed, and boarding is fast through multiple doors. The BRT links several metro lines and is a clever way to cross the city without going downtown, often beating a taxi at rush hour. It is also cheap, at the same 2-yuan fare as a normal bus.
How to Pay and Ride
Most buses now require exact payment by phone QR code or transit card rather than loose cash. Open the Tianfutong app or the WeChat or Alipay bus mini program and scan the QR code reader by the door. If you have a Tianfutong card, tap it on the reader. Cash is sometimes accepted but you need exact change. Bus stops show route numbers in Chinese, so use a map app to confirm which bus to take and in which direction, because the same number runs both ways on opposite sides of the road.
When to Choose the Bus
Take the bus when the metro does not reach your destination, when you want a cheap ride across town, or when the BRT loop is faster than weaving through traffic by taxi. Avoid regular buses at rush hour, 7:30 to 9:30 and 17:30 to 19:30, unless you enjoy standing. Late at night, regular buses stop around 22:00, though a few designated night lines run later and are useful if you miss the last metro. Ring the bell before your stop, and watch your belongings in crowded carriages.
Tracking Buses in Real Time
A map app shows in real time where your bus is, which stop you are at and how many minutes until it arrives, so you do not wait blind at the shelter. Most stops announce the next arrivals in Chinese and English on a small screen. During festivals, extra buses run to crowded sights but they fill fast. Keep headphones off so you hear the stop announcement, and signal the driver if you need the next stop.
