#6 Joy City, Young Fashion and Lifestyle

Chengdu Joy City is the city's trendiest youth shopping mall: a riot of LED screens, pop-up stores, streetwear brands and cafés that draw the city's fashion students and creative workers.

#6 Joy City, Young Fashion and Lifestyle

Chengdu Joy City (大悦城, Dàyuèchéng) is operated by COFCO and opened in 2015 in the Wuhou District, south of the city center. It is built around a simple idea: Chengdu's young consumers are not looking for luxury logos; they want experience, community and photo-friendly spaces. The architecture reflects this: a curved pink-and-gold facade wrapped in LED screens, an indoor "sky river" water feature, rooftop sports courts and a series of pop-up boxes that change monthly. Joy City was named one of China's most innovative malls when it opened and has since become a template for youth-oriented retail nationwide.

The tenant mix skews toward Chinese and Asian streetwear, indie design and lifestyle brands you will not find in traditional department stores: SMG, Stage, Chocoolate, Aape, Under Garden, plus independent sneaker resellers and tattoo studios. Food is equally on-trend: matcha cafés, craft beer bars, sourdough bakeries and Sichuan-style fusion restaurants that draw long queues on weekends. The rooftop, with its running track, basketball half-court and outdoor cinema in summer, is the city's favorite free hangout.

What to shop

  • Streetwear and sneakers: the basement level has the densest concentration of sneaker stores in Chengdu, including authorized resellers and consignment shops.
  • Beauty and cosmetics: a large Perfect Diary, Florasis and into You counter, plus Korean skincare shops.
  • Designer gifts: independent stationery shops, illustration galleries and Sichuan-culture themed product stores.
  • Books and music: a 1,000-square-meter page one bookstore and a vinyl record shop on L4.

Joy City also hosts frequent pop-up collaborations with K-pop labels, anime franchises and game releases. If you are in town during a weekend, check the mall's official WeChat account for the schedule: you may stumble into a fan meeting, a product launch or a free concert on the central stage.

Practical Information

  • Address: 50 Yuhe Road, Wuhou District (武侯区二环路西一段), near the Wuhou Temple and Jinli scenic area.
  • Transport: Metro Line 3 to Gaoshengqiao Station, exit C, then a 12-minute walk; or a short taxi from Chunxi Road.
  • Opening Hours: 10:00–22:00 daily; rooftop open until 22:30 in summer.
  • Price level: mid-range; streetwear ¥300–1,500, sneakers ¥600–2,500, coffee and desserts ¥35–70.
  • Payment: Alipay, WeChat Pay, UnionPay; most stores do not accept foreign cards.
  • Tips: arrive before 14:00 on weekends to get a table at the popular cafés; queues stretch out the door after 15:00.

Foreign visitor tips

English is limited but the vibe is welcoming; many young staff are students happy to practice. If you want to buy authentic Chinese streetwear rather than imports, Joy City is the best one-stop choice. The rooftop basketball court is free and locals welcome foreigners to join pickup games. Tipping is not expected anywhere in Chengdu, including cafés. If you buy sneakers, check the box and the insole logo carefully; counterfeit sneakers do appear in the consignment stalls, so stick to the authorized shops on L2.

Plan to spend half a day here rather than an hour. The rooftop alone is worth the detour: free basketball court, open-air cinema in summer, and a running loop with views over southern Chengdu. On weekends, the central stage hosts free live sets, fan meetings and K-pop dance covers that draw hundreds of young spectators. If you are visiting in summer, arrive after 16:00 when the rooftop cools down and the LED screens switch to evening mode. The nearest metro exit is a five-minute walk through a residential lane, so allow extra time if you are travelling with luggage.
