#9 Tianfu New Area and Chengdu's New Districts

The glass-and-steel skyline rising south of central Chengdu is not a movie set. This is Tianfu New Area, the engine of the city\\\\\\\\「s growth and where most modern travelers actually end up staying.

#9 Tianfu New Area and Chengdu's New Districts

If you fly into Chengdu Tianfu International Airport and take the metro into the city, you will pass through a swath of wide boulevards, green parks and gleaming office towers that did not exist ten years ago. That is Tianfu New Area, a national-level new area approved by the State Council in 2014 and the flagship of Chengdu\\\\\\\\「s southward expansion. It is where tech firms, banks, international schools and design hotels have moved, and it is quickly becoming the default neighborhood for business travelers.

What Tianfu New Area is

Spanning parts of five existing districts and counties, the new area is planned around a central business district, an international resort and a science city. Its heart is the Yuanxin Avenue / Finance City cluster, recognizable by the curved twin towers seen on postcards. The area also hosts the Chengdu Museum branch, new concert halls and a growing line of riverside parks.

Other new districts worth knowing

  • Chengdu Hi-Tech Zone (Gaoxin): the older southern tech belt, home to hardware and internet giants, packed with business hotels and malls.
  • Eastern New Area: the development zone around Tianfu International Airport, intended as a logistics and conference hub.
  • Qingbaijiang International Railway Port: the rail hub linking Chengdu to Europe on the China-Europe freight routes.

Why it matters for travelers

Most international-chain hotels (Marriott, Hilton, Accor, Hyatt) now have flagship properties in Tianfu New Area. Didi rides from the new area to the old town take 30-50 minutes depending on traffic. Metro Line 1 south, Line 5 and Line 18 connect the new area to the airport and the historic center. If your trip is convention-heavy, staying here saves hours of commuting.

Lifestyle in the new districts

The new districts feel different from old Chengdu: wider roads, less street food, more rooftop bars and international restaurants. Parks such as Jiaozi Park and the Jinjiang greenway run for kilometers and are perfect for morning runs. Malls like Sino-Ocean Taikoo Li (in the old center) and the newer Tianfu IFC offer global brands, cinemas and gourmet food halls.

Practical Information

  • Getting there: Metro Line 1 south to Huazhaishan or Science City; Line 18 directly from Tianfu Airport.
  • Best area to stay: Finance City / Tianfu IFC for business; Jinjiang waterfront for dining.
  • Sights: Jiaozi Financial Tower observation deck, Tianfu Art Park, Chengdu Museum new branch.
  • Costs: Mid-range hotels around ¥500-900 per night; restaurants slightly pricier than old town.
  • Tips: Save at least one evening to wander the new riverside skyline — it is the best free light show in Chengdu.

Getting Around the New Districts Without Getting Lost

Tianfu New Area is enormous, and its grid can feel disorienting at first. Most business travelers stay within a 2 km strip along Metro Line 1, where hotels, malls and restaurants cluster. Beyond that strip, walking between towers takes 15 to 20 minutes under sun or rain. Use Didi for anything beyond 1 km; sidewalks are wide but the blocks are huge. The Jiaozi Park riverside greenway is the best way to see the new district on foot, especially at sunset.

  • Hotel lobbies in Finance City usually have free shuttles to the Expo Centre during conferences.
  • Cafes open at 8 a.m. in the new district, later than the old town.
  • English menus are standard at malls; older street food stalls still require pointing.
  • Keep a layer for air-conditioned offices; they run cold year-round.
  • If you miss the last metro around 11 p.m., Didi surge pricing can triple.
