Visa policy for China has loosened considerably since 2024. Citizens of an expanding list of countries can now visit Chengdu either without a visa at all or through the transit visa-free scheme. Still, rules change quickly, and Chengdu is the only access point for many travelers heading onward to Tibet or western Sichuan, where permits matter. Verify everything on official government channels within two weeks of departure.
Visa-free entry for tourism
Since late 2024, China has introduced mutual or unilateral visa-free stays for ordinary passport holders from a growing list of countries. As of this writing, that list includes major economies such as France, Germany, Italy, Spain, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Ireland, Hungary, Austria, Belgium, Luxembourg, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and several others. Typical allowances are 15 to 30 days for tourism, family visits or business. The exact list and durations change, so check the National Immigration Administration website or your embassy before flying.
Visa-free transit (240-hour scheme)
China has expanded its transit visa-free program to 240 hours (10 days) for citizens of roughly 54 approved countries. Chengdu Tianfu (TFU) and Shuangliu (CTU) airports are designated ports of entry. To qualify you must:
- Hold a passport valid for at least another 3 months.
- Have a confirmed onward ticket to a third country or region within 240 hours.
- Travel between two different countries (you cannot transit purely between Chinese cities).
- Pass through immigration at a designated port, where a temporary entry stamp is issued on arrival.
This is the cheapest way to spend a long weekend in Chengdu without a pre-arranged visa. It does not extend to a full China holiday; for that, apply for a tourist or business visa at home.
Regular tourist and business visas
If you do not qualify for either waiver, apply for an L visa (tourist) or M visa (business) at a Chinese embassy or consulate before departure. Bring your passport, photo, application form, and either a hotel booking and flight itinerary or an invitation letter from a Chinese company. Processing times range from a few days to two weeks depending on your nationality and location.
Arrival procedure at Chengdu airports
- Fill the arrival card on the plane or use the digital declaration app before landing.
- Join the channel for foreign passports; show passport, onward ticket and hotel address.
- Collect luggage and pass customs (green channel if nothing to declare).
- Buy a local SIM card or pick up a pocket Wi-Fi at the telecom counters near arrivals.
Practical Information
- Passport validity: At least 6 months beyond your planned departure from China.
- Visas for Tibet or western Sichuan: Travelers to Lhasa or remote Tibetan areas need a Tibet Travel Permit arranged in advance through a registered agency; this is separate from your China visa.
- Overstaying: Fines and detention are serious; leave before the stamp expires.
- Official sources: National Immigration Administration (nia.gov.cn) and Chinese embassies abroad are the only reliable references.
- Tips: Take screenshots of your hotel address in Chinese; immigration and taxi drivers will ask for it.
What to Do If Your Visa Status Changes Mid-Trip
Chinese visa rules do update without much warning, and the 240-hour transit policy can be extended to more countries. If you are already in Chengdu and decide to travel onward to Tibet, you cannot simply extend at the local police station. You must leave China, apply for the relevant visa or Tibet permit abroad or through an agent, and re-enter. If you lose your passport, go immediately to your embassy or consulate in Chengdu, then to the Exit-Entry Administration to get a temporary permit before you can fly home.
- Carry a printed copy of your visa and the entry stamp page at all times.
- Snap a photo of your passport bio page on day one and store it offline.
- If a visa-free transit stamp is in your passport, do not overwrite the date on the stamp yourself.
- Extensions are rarely granted for tourism; plan exit dates conservatively.
- Consulates in Chengdu are clustered near the High-Tech Zone and Jinjiang district.
