Chengdu sits in the Sichuan Basin, enclosed by mountains on almost every side. That geography shapes its climate: a humid subtropical zone with one of the lowest annual sunshine totals anywhere in China. Grey, overcast skies are normal, summer heat feels oppressive, and winter is cool rather than freezing. Knowing the pattern makes packing and sightseeing far easier.

Annual average temperature is around 16°C. The city sees only about 1,000 to 1,200 hours of sunshine per year, compared with more than 2,000 in Beijing. Rain falls mainly in summer and is often light but persistent. Autumn (September to November)
Many locals call this Chengdu\\\\\\\\「s best season. Humidity drops, skies occasionally clear to blue, and temperatures settle at a pleasant 15-22°C. October and November are golden for ginkgo trees and mountain trips. Late September can still feel summer-like, but by November coats reappear.

Winter (December to February)
Winter is cool, damp and overcast. Daytime highs usually sit between 8 and 12°C, and nights drop to 2-5°C. Snow is rare in the city itself but possible on nearby mountains. Because indoor heating is not standard (unlike northern China), locals rely on thick clothes, hot pot and electric blankets. Travelers from cold climates are often surprised by how cold it feels inside unheated rooms.
