Xiling Snow Mountain (西岭雪山, Xīlǐng Xuěshān) is Chengdu's backyard ski resort, about 95 km west of the city in Dayi County. From December to March the slopes hold natural snow, and the cable car rises above a sea of clouds to a 3,200-meter mountain plateau. It is the most accessible winter sport getaway for anyone based in Chengdu, and even non-skiers come for the snow-play park and the cloud-sea views.
The ski area
The resort has a beginner slope (初级道), several intermediate runs, a snowboard park and a snow-play area for children. Lifts include a cable car up to the mountain plateau and chairlifts on the slopes. Rentals are on site: skis, snowboards, boots, helmets and warm jackets. The beginner slope is wide and gentle, perfect for first-timers; the intermediate runs are shorter but real. Outside ski season the same mountain is a summer hiking and sightseeing destination.
What a ski day costs
- Transport from Chengdu: bus or self-drive ~2 hours; organized day trips ¥180–¥280 per person including bus and mountain transfer.
- Entry + cable car: roughly ¥240–¥300 per person in season; the cable car is required to reach the ski plateau.
- Ski rental: ¥120–¥200 for half a day, including boots and poles; helmet ¥30. Snowboard rental similar price.
- Lift pass: ¥100–¥180 half-day, depending on snow conditions; beginners do not need a full lift pass if they stay on the beginner slope.
- Private lesson: ¥300–¥500 for 1.5 hours, shared with up to three people; highly recommended for first-timers.

- Location: Xiling Snow Mountain Scenic Area, Dayi County (大邑县西岭雪山), ~95 km west of Chengdu.
- Transport: long-distance bus from Chadianzi Station (茶店子车站) to Xiling; or drive via the Chengyuan Expressway (~2 hours). Organized tours pick up from city hotels.
- Hours: cable cars 08:30–17:00; ski slopes 09:00–17:00; season December–March, best snow January–February.

Tips for foreign guests
- Dress in layers; mountain weather shifts fast. The plateau is 10°C colder than Chengdu and windier. Rent a helmet, take the beginner slope first, and book a half-day lesson if new.
- Drink water; the altitude (3,200 m) is noticeable. Avoid alcohol the night before and take it easy on the first run.
- Non-skiers: the snow-play area (snow tubing, snow bikes) costs ¥80–¥120 and is family-friendly; the cloud-sea viewpoint alone is worth the cable car.
- Useful Chinese: 我要请教练 (Wǒ yào qǐng jiàoliàn = I want a coach); 初学者道在哪? (Chūxuézhě dào zài nǎ? = Where is the beginner slope?); 租一副雪板 (Zū yī fù xuěbǎn = rent a snowboard/ski set); 索道票 (suǒdào piào = cable car ticket).
Xiling is not the Alps, but it is a real, snow-covered ski day two hours from central Chengdu — a genuinely surprising winter day out, and an easy add-on to a Chengdu winter trip. If you do not ski, the cable-car cloud-sea ride and the snow-play park are worth the trip even on their own.
How to pay and get around
Nearly every ticket, tea-house table and bar bill in Chengdu is settled by mobile: scan the QR code on the table with WeChat or Alipay, enter the amount, and confirm. If you are a short-stay visitor, ask the hotel to help bind a card, or carry around 500 yuan in small notes for old stalls, temple fairs and late taxi shares. The metro covers most venues shown here, and Didi is cheap from 22:00 when the metro closes; agree on the drop-off point before getting in.
